Taiwan and China signed a Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement, CSSTA, in June 2013 in Shangai. It still requires the parlaments confirmation.[1]
Taiwanese are not happy about the agreement. They say that it is done to help big business corporations in the expense of the small ones. The agreement would allow Chinese businessmen and their families to come to Taiwan with infinitely renewable visas.[1] The official goal of the CSSTA is good. To make Taiwan's financial situation better.[2] However, unemployment rate of Taiwan is huge. People do not want Chinese people to come to their country and make the rate even more bigger. The agreement would do just that; it gives Chinese companies a possibility to invest more freely to Taiwanese service sector such as banks and healt care.[2] |
Agreement is not good in a long run. It is planned to make financial situation a little bit better but only for a short period of time. Chinese cheap labor would take over and the Taiwan's economy would collapse.[3]
Maybe even more important, the agreement would expose Taiwan to Chinese political pressure. China's official policy is still to attach Taiwan back to China.[3] More; the English summary of CSSTA www.ecfa.org.tw/EcfaAttachment/ECFADoc/ECFA.pdf REFERENCES : 1. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia- 26809066 2. http://thediplomat.com/2014/03/taiwanese- occupy-legislature-over-china-pact/ 3. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia- 26705779 |
